It happened by accident, but before they know it, they’re living in Manhattan and have a routine.

They go out on Friday nights, laugh with their friends and insist they both just happen to be a woman who fell in love with another woman, and surely that must happen every day. Everyone laughs and buys shots and fancy drinks and before they know it they’re pouring themselves into a cab and they can’t keep their hands off each other. (Only one cabbie has ever complained about this.)

Saturday mornings are lazy affairs. Pam gets up early to paint and tries to be quiet because she knows Karen likes to sleep in, but she only ever gets the paints mixed on the palette before Karen is wrapping her arms around her waist and kissing the top of her head. Karen always demands a portrait before she jumps in the shower, but she’s never disappointed when there’s no trace of her on the canvas by the time she’s showered and dressed.

When Pam is finished painting for the morning, they throw on matching black Converse sneakers (“because every couple needs something about them that makes other people want to throw up,” they say, smiling, when they buy them) and head out into the chilly air.

They hold hands on the way down the street, talking about nothing and everything. Pam stops to examine the rack of postcards outside of a corner shop, makes sure she gets a good look at all the places she wants to go, but skips over the New York ones because been there, done that. She smiles and runs her index finger over images of Rome and London and lush, green places she doesn’t recognize.

Karen plucks a postcard from near the bottom and holds it up for Pam to see. Underneath a photo of a beautiful blue sky and a crush of patchwork, multicolored buildings is written Lisboa.

“Lisbon,” Karen says. “We could go there.”

Pam nods and points to a postcard showing a view of Sydney Harbor. “And here.”

“We’ll go everywhere,” Karen says. She doesn’t put the postcard back on the rack - she buys it and tucks it playfully into Pam’s coat pocket, then kisses her cheek.

They walk along the street, stopping at every shop or vendor that has something out for display. They try on sunglasses and scarves, and model them for each other. They laugh and take pictures on their cell phones until the vendors give them dirty looks and they put down the merchandise and run away, giggling, hand-in-hand.

They go into a specialty corner store to buy ingredients for dinner (Saturdays are their “culinary adventure” nights), and the man behind the counter speaks horrible English, so Karen speaks to him in perfect Italian. Pam stands back and admires the exchange; she can only say “There are cheeseburgers in your pants” in Spanish and so far that has never come in handy. She often begs Karen to speak to her in another language, even if it’s just to say “I think the milk’s gone bad” in French. She thinks maybe she’ll barter art lessons for foreign language lessons.

When Karen is finished, she smiles at Pam and takes her hand and asks what she’s thinking about.

Pam can’t really put it into words, so she just leans in and pecks Karen on the lips, then presses her cheek against hers. She puts her free hand on Karen’s waist and whispers in her ear, “I’ll tell you later.”

Karen loves when they are tangled like this, so she smiles and whispers, “Ti amo.”

this is just beautiful. i love how it's just a snapshot of them. as amazing as the writing and the characterization are (and they are amazing), what really made this fic for me were all the little details.

Thank you. :) I try for the warm fuzzies. I like looking at all the little day-to-day things of life and trying to do something them. (And if KaPam happens to be involved in that, well, so much the better.)

This is positively adorable. Especially the part with the postcards- I can see how they would be the type of couple to travel.

Could I suggest that you post this and the other KaPam fic you did recently over at officegirlslash? We would love to have you ;)

I think I've read this one before, actually. Still love it, though. And I like how they're still so touristy.
